About Uncle Ken

Passion & Philosophy

My winter love affair started on the cross-country trails near Toronto in Canada, but everything changed when I moved to the spectacular West Coast in the 1990s. The moment I laid eyes on the snowy mountains of British Columbia, I fell head over heels for alpine skiing, quickly drawn into ski touring, ski mountaineering, and then the graceful art of telemark turns.

Years ago, I volunteered teaching at a night skiing lesson for parents and instantly caught the “teaching bug”.  Since then, I have taught kids and young adults, and helped adults conquer the slopes as true first-timers! There is absolutely nothing like watching someone making their first turns, let go of their fear, and find their confidence skiing down the slopes or balancing on their skate skis through the forest.

My teaching philosophy for skiing – Safety, Thrill, Enjoyment, Learning, Feedback, and do it all over again !

Uncle Ken's
5 Principles of
Confident Skiing

1. Look where you want to go — Chin up, lead with your eyes and turn your head to look. Your skis will follow your gaze. Don’t stare at your skis, or you go down right in front of your skis (because you look there, dah!).

2. Visualize — Yes, your mind holds the real magic that guides your body down the mountain. If you think about turning, I guarantee you will turn.

3. Fear of Falling — Falling is just a step in learning to ski. Learn to control your fall so the fear of falling never controls you.

4. Repeat & Repeat — Embrace the repetition. Tune into how your body feels, voice what is working, and repeat the motion until your mind and muscle memory takes over.

5. Own Your Journey — Believe you can do it. Success requires patience, observation, and fierce persistence. No one else can ski for you—the power is entirely yours.
